| Exactly the 321 is "stabilized" by the addition of Ti, the Ti binds with the C and prevents the C from precipitating. The 304L gets a similar result by eliminating most of the C. It is exactly the same a 304 with the exception that the limit on C is .03 vice .08% We dont use very much 321 so I'm not sure about the cost, we do use 304L or 316L in any austenitic stainless that is going to be welded.The cost is not significantly different than 304 or 316. If you had a source it would probably hold up quite a bit better.
Good eye on the spring, that is exactly the problem with that arrangement. Even people whose job it is to assemble those motors don't seem to realize you have to put them in the right way. Riding on the inner race obviously is not good. the race rotates against the spring and generates too much heat, eventually the commutator segements start to fall off and then after usually a couple of them fall off, the brush goes in the pothole lol and breaks off and usually takes off a few more segments when it does.
